JULIAN MARCROFT, BSc (Hons), MICE, CEng

Julian is a chartered structural engineer who now runs the small consultancy, TimberSolve, specialising in timber engineering.


He graduated from Manchester University in 1981 with BSc.Hons. (1st class) in Civil Engineering. He worked the first 5 years at Consulting Engineers Allott & Lomax primarily on heavy engineering projects, both in design office and on Resident Engineer’s staff. The next 2 years were spent working at the small general Consulting Engineers Booth King Partnership.


In 1988 he joined the Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA) and has worked in the timber engineering field ever since. He spent 7 years at TRADA working on research and consultancy projects, both UK- and overseas-based, including the design verification of one of the first 5-storey timber-frame buildings in the UK. The next 3 years were spent as Product Development Manager at Gang-Nail Systems Ltd.


In 1997 he jointly founded TimberSolve Ltd, a small consultancy firm undertaking only timber engineering work and specialising in the development of products for the construction industry. He has been active in Code and Standards work over several years and from 2000 to 2004 was UK Technical Coordinator for Eurocode 5. He currently chairs the BSI committee B/525/5, which oversees the implementation of timber design codes, notably Eurocode 5, in the UK.
